prof. Franco Silvestris

Head of the Project

He completed his Master’s degree in 1974 at the University of Bari, Italy, where he also obtained specializations in Clinical Haematology and Medical Oncology in 1977 and 1980, respectively.
In 1982, he completed a 6-year study in the US at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and then at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he received a research award from the “Lupus Foundation of America”.

Upon his return to Italy, he was appointed Full Professor of internal medicine and oncology at the University of Bari in 1999, where he lectured while mentoring and supervising medical students and conducted research in his academic field.
At the same School of Medicine, Prof. Silvestris was elected Chairman of the Postgraduate Specialty School of Medical Oncology and served in that capacity for 3 consecutive terms (9 years) until his retirement in November 2019. During the last 3 years of his tenure, he also served as Head of the Doctoral Programme of the University of Bari in Biomolecular Medical and Pharmacological Sciences.

As the Head of the Clinical Department of Medicine and Oncology at the University Hospital, Polyclinic of Bari, Professor Silvestris focused on the treatment of complex conditions such as autoimmune disorders, immunodeficiencies and certain hematopoietic malignancies such as multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, chronic leukaemia and lymphoma. He has also developed basic and clinical research programs in solid tumours, particularly such as colorectal, breast, lung, kidney, prostate and ovarian cancers. In this area, his main research interests were devoted to basic and clinical research in immunology, cancer immunology, molecular mechanisms of metastasis in cancer, cancer immunotherapy, and molecular medicine. In 2015, he developed the “Center for Oncogenomic Research” (CROG) at the same University, which focuses on molecular diagnosis of cancer and precision medicine for cancer treatment.

This research team implemented an oncogenomic approach to cancer treatment, the “Liquid Biopsy Program,” for use in clinical oncology in breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancers, as well as for early detection of relative cancer risk, particularly in cases of exposure to carcinogenic environmental conditions. The research results of the team led by Professor Silvestris have been presented at numerous Italian and international congresses and meetings and published by both national and international peer-reviewed scientific journals. His scientific output includes more than 350 scientific articles, and in 2019 he published the textbook “ONCOGENOMICS: from basic research to precision medicine” (Academic Press, ISBN 978-0-12-811785-9).

prof. Simone Palini

He graduated in biology in 1998 from the University of Urbino, Italy and specialized in molecular genetics at the University of Bologna in 2001. During his postgraduate studies, he participated in many basic research activities at the University of Bologna, particularly in the field of embryogenesis, and gained extensive experience in gamete biology.

His dedication to these issues contributed to his ESHRE certification as a “Senior Clinical Embryologist”, which opened the possibility for him to undertake clinical research and molecular and cell biology studies in institutional centres such as the “Infermi Hospital” in Rimini, where Dr Palini heads the section related to IVF (in vitro fertilization) used both in cases of primary infertility, as well as associated with cancer in women.

His main interests are in the biological and genetic aspects of human reproduction in cancer-related infertility, with a focus on gene expression profile in gametes, genomic evaluation and gene signature of primary female infertility, gamete and embryo vitrification.

Dr Palini has participated as a speaker in numerous international conferences and graduate courses. In 2013, he was awarded the “Roberts Edward Prize” for his research on gene DNA properties in human blastocyte fluid, and in 2018 he was awarded the GFI Prize for additional research on miRNAs in blastocyte fluid. His research findings have been published in several national and international scientific journals, where he has authored more than 50 articles.

In 2016, she obtained the title of specialist in Gynaecology and Obstetrics by submitting a thesis on ovarian stem cells in both fertile and menopausal women.

Dr Silvestris spent 2 years studying at the University of Lyon, France, improving her qualifications in the field of fertility preservation. She particularly focused on assessing the role of specific molecular pathways involving homocysteine in oocyte maturation. After returning to Bari, she became a PhD student at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Human Oncology of the University of Bari, joining a research group investigating the role of ovarian stem cells in adult women. Since 2019, he has been an assistant professor at the National Cancer Institute in Bari, where she runs daily practice for patients undergoing anti-cancer treatment and those at risk of infertility. The pathogenesis of infertility in women is her main scientific interests. She plans to develop an innovative strategy for overcoming the inability to conceive through the use of oocytes derived from ovarian stem cells.

This therapeutic option for young infertile women is the subject of intensive research only in a few laboratories and infertility treatment centres in the world, and the involvement of doctor Silvestris in this subject is confirmed by her recent research published in international scientific journals.

Silvia De Stefani, MD

In 2007, she received a degree with honours in Biotechnology and Medicine at the University of Bologna, Italy, for her dissertation on in vitro oocyte maturation.
In 2012, she completed master’s degree in reproductive medicine at the University of Padua in Italy, and in 2015 she completed master’s degree in reproductive sciences and assisted reproductive technology.
